Artist: Tang Cheng 唐成 Material: Porcelain, high-fire sapphire glaze Technique: High-temperature glossy glaze firing
Dimensions: 33×13×42 cm (L×W×H) Year: 2025 'The universe is a finger; all things are a horse.' So begins Zhuangzi's famous argument that the names we give things conceal as much as they reveal. For him, the horse was a thought experiment — an ordinary creature whose very ordinariness invites us to question why we see what we see.
This version of 驰骋天地 is cast in obsidian — a high-fired glossy black, so deep it returns the room as a dark mirror. Where the Sapphire edition speaks of sky and sea, the Obsidian edition speaks of the undifferentiated — the formless ground from which all shapes arise.
The mane, tail, and musculature are identical to the Sapphire version; only the glaze changes, and with it the entire mood of the piece. Together, the two are a yin-yang pair — the complementary forces the Dao holds in tension: manifest and hidden, visible horse and invisible Way.
Sold individually or as a pair. Collectors of the series are encouraged to display the two together. meditator in the instant before the breath releases, the warrior before the first strike.
