Artist: Zijian Wang Materials: High-white porcelain (高白泥), underglaze Qinghua cobalt, silver overglaze Technique: Qinghua with hand-applied silver (青花银彩) Capacity: 120ml Dimensions: Diameter 9cm, height 5cm The Gongdaobei (公道杯) is the fairness pitcher of the Chinese tea ceremony. Its purpose is democratic: tea is poured from the brewing vessel into the Gongdaobei first, where it reaches a uniform strength, then distributed equally among the cups at the table. Everyone receives the same tea. The name itself means "the cup of fairness."
Zijian Wang's version widens the flared rim into a generous opening, giving the cobalt scrolling vine motif room to cascade down the exterior in loose, organic rhythms. Between the Qinghua brushwork, silver traces follow the stems, catching the light where cobalt absorbs it. The interplay between the two materials is the signature of Wang's practice: the matte depth of underglaze cobalt against the reflective warmth of precious metal, two registers of mark-making occupying the same surface without competing.
The high-white porcelain body (高白泥) has a luminous translucency that lets the Qinghua pigment read as suspended within the wall rather than sitting on top of it.
